Who’s Your Mentor?

If you are in a home based business, you need to make sure you are constantly learning and applying. No matter what your experience level. You need someone or several someones to keep you motivated and on track.

Who are your inspirational models? Who do you look up to? Napoleon Hill, Andrew Carnegie, Jim Rohn, Anthony Robbins? These are all fantastic mentors. There are plenty of lesser known mentors that you probably follow as well. Do you try to listen to them daily?

Even mentors have their mentors and they make sure to keep the messages fresh in their minds.  Anthony Robbins first mentor was actually Jim Rohn.  Jim Rohn’s mentor was Earl Shoaff and Napoleon Hill’s mentor was Andrew Carnegie.  All great men that followed other great and successful role models.

You don’t have to do this everyday. Everyone is different and you know what works for you. Just make sure that you are constantly watching or listening to something that helps to keep you focused and motivated.

It is very easy to become distracted by life in general and before you know it, you are not doing what you need to do to promote your business.  Keep yourself motivated, keep yourself on track, choose your mentors then watch or listen to them as often as you can.

Collaborate with people in the business you are in and remember you can also learn a lot from those that are in similar but different types of businesses as well.

Remember that self-discipline is required to run a business and it starts with making sure that you are learning from successful people past and present.

Email Marketing

Most people in network marketing know you need to build your list. Building a list of people who are interested in what you’re offering is crucial even if they don’t buy right away. As a matter of fact, it’s important to get their information first, before they buy because in many MLM and network marketing companies you may never see them again.

Often the main reason a person buys a product online or offline from any MLM company is they respect the opinion of the person they are buying from. Even if they already know and love the product, they can buy it from anyone they want. Make them want to buy it from you.

You want to keep contacting them periodically and building a relationship so that in any event, they know and trust you more than the products they are buying. They believe and trust you, so when you tell them about the latest product that you have found and love, whether it is in your current company or another company, they will buy from you, because they believe you.

I hope it goes without saying that you should be offering products that you, yourself use and believe in because if your products or services suck, then your reputation is shot and they won’t come back no matter what you say or offer.

In order to build a list you need a good email marketing solution to build your list with.  I use GetResponse. Another good one is Aweber. Both allow you to create email templates, web forms, and newsletters and allow you to send out one-time emails or create auto-responders. Anew feature on GetResponse allows you to create a landing page but at this point this is still in Beta.

Check them out and choose the best one for you. You can get a free test drive from GetResponse and try Aweber for $1. Click on a banner below to try them out.

SEO-Search Engine Optimization

soo whatSearch engine optimization. Is simply that, optimizing your sites for the search engines. So that when people search for something related to any of your offerings, you show up on the search engines for the keyword that was searched.

You want to make sure that your site is optimized and your articles and blog posts, if you have a blog, which you should, needs to be optimized.  You want to use keywords on your sites and posts. Choose 1 keyword/phrase per post/page and then also use alternate words and phrases for the same keyword.

In other words if you keyword phrase is weight loss products, also use diet or diets and phrases like losing weight in your page or post. I want to stop there for a minute though, because first off, if you do offer weight loss products, I do not actually think I would use that keyword right away until you have ranked your site for other keywords first as it is a very, very hard keyword phrase to rank for and so is diet and probably diets as well.

Make sure you have a really good keyword tool that will show you how many people are searching for the keywords you have chosen and are interested in using, as well as, your competition and alternate keywords and phrases that will be easier to rank for first. Go with those.

You can use keyword tools like Jaaxy and Google Keyword Planner that are free or low-cost or you can use a more expensive tool.

If you are brand spanking new with a brand new website, the chances of you ranking for weight loss are, well, there aren’t any. If you write really well and have a blog, you have a better shot if people are able to find your site and you build up a following but most have to work hard at it.

So figure out what you want to promote, if you haven’t already, do a little research, learn all you can on the subject of SEO and start promoting your sites. Use social networking sites to help promote as well. These can be a very effective tool to get visitors to your site, which is something else that helps in ranking in the search engines at higher levels.

Social Media Advertising Strategies

Did you know that there are over 1.25 billion active users on Facebook? There are 255 million active users each month on Twitter. 78% of these users are mobile and 200 million active Instagram users.

Chances are your market is active on the social media platforms and you just need to go out and find them.

You can create a profile on these sites, but unless you are actively posting, commenting, and sharing you will not see any real results.

Your potential customer is bombarded daily with marketing ads and other social media sites and many of them are in the same business that you are. You need to stand out. You need to know what your potential customer is looking for and you need to know how to get their attention.

When you create your page on these sites don’t jump right into prospecting and promoting your products or services. You need to build up trust, you need to engage and you need to see people engaging on your page.

If you blast your “friends” with ads and requests to purchase your products, your post will soon be ignored and you may even find that people are deleting you.

Be interesting. Be social. Build trust. Give information only at first without a request for the sale. Make sure the information is based in facts though or you will not be trusted in the future no matter how great your offerings are. No one will believe you.

Don’t forget to blog. Blogging is still one of the most powerful ways to get your information out there.

Domains

If your going to have a website you need a good domain name. You want to give your domain name a bit of thought, because you want the customer to be able to relate the name to the products or services they are looking for but you also want a name that you can rank on Google for your particular niche.

If you expect to get customers online then you need to be found online. So a basic step would be to use a good keyword tool like Google keyword planner.  You used to be able to freely use the tool and technically you can but now you have to use a adwords account, which you can get if you do not have one using the link above to register.

It’s pretty painless and you can then use the tool so sign up. You can check the popularity of a keyword by how many people are searching for that keyword or keyword phrase. You can also check the adwords competition, which will give you an idea of what your dealing with, in terms of the competition out there.

I also like to do a search myself to get an idea of who is on the first page of the search because if you offer health products and the first search page results are full of sites like WebMD, Wikipedia and government sites like the CDC. They have been doing this for a long time, it’s not impossible to push them off the page but I only say that because nothing is impossible but this would be pretty darn near impossible so I would change my keyword.  Go for a long-tailed keyword. They are usually quicker to rank anyhow.

There are plenty of keyword tools that have a lot more features and vary in options and ease of use that cost and can often be worth the investment because they offer more information in one place, easy access is nice and it saves time but this is not something that you have to do at first because much of the pertinent information they offer can be found using individual tools as well. We will go over more of these in a different post. Once you find the keyword/phrase you like, you can purchase it through companies like Godaddy. your next step will be to find a good hosting service. That is the topic of my next blog.

Starting a Home Based Business

working from homeIf you’re starting a home based business, this is an extremely exciting time for you. You probably have all kinds of ideas about what you’re going to do and how you’re going to do it. Once you start to dig it,  it may get a bit scary if it’s an online business.

All the things to think about and accomplish before you even thinking about actually selling something.  Domains, keywords, hosting, products, layouts, getting traffic to your sites. It’s a lot of work but it can be rewarding and if you take it a step at a time it wont be so daunting.

Your going to definitely need a domain name but you want to put a little thought into it. Eventually with a a little work, you want your site to be found on Google, Bing and Yahoo and you want it to be found under keywords that make sense for the products or services you are offering.

You could get to page one on the search engines for a keyword, but it wont do you much good if you’re offering personalized t-shirts and your website shows up under cat treats.

Make sure what you put out there in the way of your blog posts, advertising and any other media you use is geared toward your offerings.

Before you get there though you need a good targeted domain name that makes sense and that it is a keyword that people are actually searching for.  You can use “Google’s Keyword Planner“. You will need a Gmail account, which is easy enough to set up so get one if you don’t have one.

Once you’re in the keyword planner, you can search different keywords related to your business and see how many searches they each get a month and you can get an idea of how much competition your will have. The competition listed is actually the competition for paid ads but you still get an idea of what you are working with for the organic search results as well.

You will also want to check to see what kind of results pull up when you search the keywords yourself on Google especially. If you are offering vitamins and you see a lot of major sites on page one, the chances of beating them out are pretty slim, so go for keywords that work for your products or services but that don’t have as many sites on them that dominate the internet and will be a little easier to rank.
